Philosophy

History

Educators Bill and Bunny Hughes built Sandy Hollow Day Camp in 1969 with dedication, love and a passion for working with children. Together, on this former pickle farm, they realized their dream of summer camp providing generations of campers with fun activities, lasting friendships and learning in an exceptionally nurturing family atmosphere.

Bill, a headmaster of a NYC prep school and skilled athletic coach and Bunny, elementary school teacher and speech and language specialist in NYC and Long Island public schools, along with their daughters Beth and Eileen, brought their special talents to the program. The Hughes family took great pride in building the camp from the “ground up”- no job was too small or too great. The girls experienced a lifetime of happy summers at Sandy Hollow and presently work to continue the family tradition of excellence in camping.

From the camp’s humble beginnings in 1969 to the present, close relationships have been formed with hundreds of families and the surrounding communities.
